The invasion of France - Malines to Valenciennes, deportation was in the opposite direction

The German army invades France by marching into Malines, the last stop-over for Perla and Michel Lewkowitz and Valenciennes, where the family had lived.

The map shows the route of the German attack.

Perla and Michel were deported to Auschwitz on the same route, in the opposite direction.

Ironically, this map of the invasion reverses the routes of attack and escape. From Malines to Valenciennes, from Valenciennes via Malines to Auschwitz.

Having seen the map, you may wish to try  the simple but meaningful quiz below.

1) Of 1.5 million Jewish children in Europe in 1939, how many survived?
Most went into hiding and lived
Most went safely to the US and Britain
Only about 10 percent survived
Children were not victims
