Some 300,000 Jews were living in France.
when the Germans invaded the country.

Many were French citizens whose families had lived in France for centuries and who were fully assimilated. Others had come to France, often from Eastern Europe.

The Jews of France were required to register and restrictions on owning property and practicing certain professions were introduced.

The requirement to wear a yellow Star of David, with which Betty was forced to comply, was imposed in June 1942, three months before the deportation to Auschwitz on September 15th, 1942.

Jews who had been naturalized after certain dates were deprived of their citizenship, although many had children born in France

From The War Against the Jews, by Lucy S. Davidowicz

The German state, deciding that the Jews should not live, arrogated itself the judgement as to whether a whole people, had the right to existence, a judgement that no man and no state have the right to make. '

Anyone who on the basis of such a judgement' ... . plans the organized slaughter of a people and participates in it, does something that is fundamentally different from all crimes that have existed in the past

To carry out this judgement, designated as the Final Solution, the German dictatorship involved and engaged the entire bureaucratic amd functional apparatus of the German state and the National Socialist movement and employed the best available technological means.

"The Final Solution" destroyed the East European Jews.
In doing so, it subverted fundamental moral principles and every system of law that had governed, however imperfectly, human society for millenia.
